This was to be my entry point into bicycle touring. I was (almost) sure that I was cut out for it, but what was it really going to be like in the bike saddle hour after hour? Was I going to stick at it?

It was time for me to pack up my sh#t and test out all the theories that I had developed over countless hours of reading of other’s exploits. And so, with only one sure fire way to find out, my Easter Shakedown 2014 was born.

The plan was to ride from Adelaide to Balaklava, about 90km north of Adelaide on day one, bush camp over night and then cycle back the second day.

I had an initial list of gear that I would need, food, a bike and trailer and endless enthusiasm which I would need on day one as wet weather set in and the “clear blue” changed to “bucketing grey”.

How did it turn out, these posts tell of that first exploratory ride.
