This rating system is a basic method used to categorize the overall conditions and technical difficulty of the trails reviewed on this site. Select a trail that matches the skills, fitness and experience you and any other riders are seeking. If you have young children, the easy trails may be more suitable and remember, the tracks will be more difficult when wet. You may wish to avoid riding in, or just following rain.

The aim of this rating system is to:

  • Help you select a suitable trail.
  • Match trails with cycling skill levels.
  • Assist with ride planning.
  • Improve the ride outcome and experience.

But remember, you are the best person to decide if a ride is suitable so these criteria should be combined with personal judgment determine if it is suitable for your needs.

Be sure to check track conditions before heading out. The safety of you and your group is your responsibility.

Lightly trafficked back roads, possibly unsurfaced with minor ruts or pot-holes.Shallow or moderate slopes with short sections of steeper climbs but which should still enable riding for the moderately fit cyclist.
3DifficultFor the more experienced cyclists with trails suitable for off-road quality mountain bikes and touring bikes.Higher percentage of rough / unpaved surfaces possibly including narrow tracks or lanes requiring a higher level of skill to negotiate.A wider range of climbs and descents of a more challenging nature that may require walking.
4SevereRequring a high level of fitness with riders being capable of riding longer distances and familiar with off road or rough terrain.Any type of surface should be expected including very rough tracks, creek crossings requiring a higher degree of technical riding or considerable distances. Falling off could be expected.A higher percentage of challenging hills which could include severe climbs and descents.
5ExtremeRiders must be very experienced with all road surfaces and weather conditions. Able to manage all conditions and have a high degree of self sufficiency.A combination of all the previous condiitons should be expected but also requiring the carrying of equipment and supplies for multi-day excursionsYou can guarantee than there will be steep inclines involved where your bike becomes a wheels walking stick. Longer distances involving rides of hundreds (or thousands) of kilometres can be expected.
